Flight of Empowerment: Celebrating the Journey and Strength of Women

Throughout history, women have confronted numerous challenges. Not that long ago, they were denied basic rights such as voting or obtaining a credit card in their own names.

Blatant job discrimination was experienced firsthand by Songbird Artistry’s own aunt, Arlene Groch, a retired civil rights attorney. After graduating from law school, she was told by a man that he would never hire a woman. Furious but undeterred, Arlene went on to open her own successful practice, where she often focused on cases defending the rights of women, children, and others facing discrimination.

Making a living by creating art is not easy, and it can be even harder for women. A Flight of Empowerment is more than just an art exhibit; it is a celebration of the essence of empowerment. The pieces on display capture the complexities of balancing work and life, honor the legacies of the women who came before us, and encourage and support the women who follow. The exhibit embodies the strength of deep-seated foundations and unwavering determination, much like a sturdy oak tree offering shelter and fortitude.

Among the talented artists featured, Debbie Maier Jacknin, co-owner of Songbird Artistry with her daughters Jacklyn and Jennifer, will be showcasing her powerful stained-glass mosaic, She Persists: Power of Knowledge. This piece juxtaposes the past, present, and future of women’s rights, drawing inspiration from the Impressionist period as she depicts a woman and a young girl in long dresses overlooking water with lily pads. The parasol held by the woman symbolizes the glass ceiling—an invisible barrier that continues to limit the progress of women and minorities. The young girl, reading as the ceiling rises beneath her, embodies the hope for future generations. Through this imagery, Debbie encourages girls and women to educate themselves, have confidence in their abilities, and continue striving for equality.

This exhibit is made possible through our collaboration with LocalGood. LocalGood connects artists with people who value and appreciate the hard work artisans bring to their craft. They donate 5% of each transaction to a charity selected by the artist, creating a meaningful impact with every sale. Learn more about them at local-good.com.

By coming together, women can foster each other’s growth, uniting in strength to create remarkable transformations. Join us in this empowering celebration and witness the incredible impact when strong women empower women.

In future emails and blogs, we will share the stories of these talented artists and the unique inspirations behind their work. Stay tuned!
